Inkjet paper is a paper designed for inkjet printers, typically classified by its weight and brightness. The term ‘inkjet paper’ is a general term that could apply to the many different types of paper that can be used in an inkjet printer, e.g. copy paper or photo paper.
Besides the weight & brightness the other attributes that define inkjet paper are:
- Finish
- Thickness
- Smoothness
- Opacity
Inkjet paper is often divided by its finish:
- Coated (matte/satin, glossy) – paper that has a matte/satin or a glossy coating in order to improve the appearance of the paper and improve its printability
- Uncoated Photo paper is a type of inkjet paper but different from standard paper in its use and appearance, often classified by its finish into:
- Regular (also called semi-glossy) – the least expensive, but also the lowest quality photo paper
- Glossy – the most popular with a shiny finish, resulting in a vivid look
- Matte – has less of a glare than glossy paper. It is often used to produce superior text results
Matte and glossy prints will typically feel different to the touch, but when displayed under glass their results will often look very similar.
